Self-esteem in children is vitally important in building confidence. Evidence shows if young children have confidence within themselves, they will learn more. So how can we build confidence and self-esteem in our children?
Hug more and listen to what children have to say.
Accept and acknowledge their feelings and emotions, not just the easy ones like happiness and love, but anger and disappointment.
Have reasonable expectations of children, given their age and ability. Not too high that they always fail, but not too low that they get no sense of achievement.
Be consistent in the limits we lay down, children need to know where their boundaries are in order to feel safe and good about themselves.
Tell them ‘I love you more each day’.
When we give a child a compliment, we hold their hands and look directly at them.
